With the establishment of the Qatar Central Bank by the Amiri Decree No. 15 of the year 1993; it became necessary to issue new banknotes carrying the name of the Qatar Central Bank. Thus, the Third Issue of the Qatari Riyal was put into circulation on Saturday, the 22nd of June 1996, carrying almost the same denominations and features that characterized the Second Issue, except for some additional security features that were introduced into the new banknotes to protect against forgery.

 

Currency: The Qatari Riyal (QR), Third Issue

Issuer: Qatar Central Bank

Exchange Rate Regime: Linked to the SDRs and then to the USD.

Exchange Rate: QR 4.7619 per SDR, with a margin of ± 2.25% over the period 1966-2001, and QR3.64 per USD from July 2001 – 15 June 2003.

Period of circulation: 22 June 1996 – 15 June 2003.

Currency denominations: Five-Hundred Riyals, One-Hundred Riyals, Fifty Riyals, Ten Riyals, Five Riyals, and One Riyal.

Coin denominations: Fifty Dirhams; Twenty-Five Dirhams; Ten Dirhams; and Five Dirhams (100 Dirhams = One QR).

Deadline of cancellation: 23 September 2013
